Bono Pulls a Kristol: Error in First 'NYT' Column

Bono Following in the illustrious (or is it notorious?) footsteps of William Kristol, U2 rocker Bono made an error in his first column for the NYT on Sunday, requiring a correction today.

Kristol had flubbed a reference to Michelle Malkin in his maiden effort last January (confusing her with Michael Medved, go figure).  See my column about that here. Bono's mistake related to describing the arranger of a famous Frank Sinatra song. The correction, running smack in the middle of the Times' op-ed page today reads:

"An Op-Ed column on Sunday, about Frank Sinatra, misidentified the arranger of the Sinatra version of 'My Way.'  He was Don Costa, not Nelson Riddle." -- Greg Mitchell

Yeah, well an even larger error is claiming that Sinatra was never in better voice or at his interpretive best than on those execrable "Duets" CDs.
They might have allowed the Bonos of the world to inhabit The Chairman's world for a small period (even though it was in a recording studio 3,000 miles away from Sinatra's), but those versions will never replace the originals.
And did ANYBODY proof that piece before it went into print? A factual error was the least of its problems.
The best of LATE Sinatra is "She Shot Me Down"
The best of ANY Sinatra is any of the "concept" pieces from 1954-1968.

Catching that mistake would have required the editor to finish reading the column--which, given the material, is a lot to ask of anyone.

Fair play pointing out the error and boo to the fact checkers and the man himself for the error.

That being said, unlike the snotty, condescending commenters above, I thought the piece was wonderfully interesting and entertaining.

I'm not the biggest U2 fan in the world, but it was great to see the point of view of another superstar on Sinatra. Perhaps some feel it's a pity we're not all jaded aesthetes...

Bono STILL rocks! Bet he doesn't even write the damn columns! BUT HE ROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOCKS!
